Prohibitionist

One who believes that the Bible explicitly teaches that all non-medicinal consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited by God. My use of the term includes those who believe that the Biblical prohibition allows the ancient use of wine for water purification purposes only (perhaps they would classify that as “medicinal use”).

Abstentionist

One who believes that while non-medicinal alcohol consumption was allowed in Biblical times, it is forbidden for us today, at least within the culture of the USA, by New Testament principles of avoiding offenses that might hinder the Gospel.

Moderationist

One who believes that the Bible teaches that non-medicinal consumption of alcoholic beverages is allowed, but drunkenness is foolish and sinful. Many moderationists abstain from alcoholic beverages.
